The Homowo African Storytel ling event will replace the long standing Homowo Festival, a tradi tional Ghanaian harvest festival founded by master Ghanaian drum mer Obo Addy in 1990. For years, the Homowo Festival has brought to Portland an authentic ethnic cel ebration, blending African music, dance, pageantry, crafts, food and demonstrations. “The Homowo Festival was a laboroflove,’’explained Addy. ”It has always been important to me to share the heritage o f the original Ghanaian festival with the Portland community to create a welcoming, vibrant place for people of diverse international origins. The Homowo Festival was successful in its mis sion, but it is time for a change in direction. W e’re excited to use the tim e -h o n o re d m eth o d of storytelling to share the rich cul tural traditions of Africa.” The departure o f the Homowo Festival also allow s Addy more time to focus on his life ’s work as a renow ned m aster drum m er and com poser. He is currently w ork ing on larger sym phonic pieces, and will debut his first full o r chestral symphony, “Cries O f Our M others,” Aug. 12 at the Port land Festival Symphony in W ash ington Park.
